Kool & The Gang, Whitesnake Grab Top Vault Spots

Kool & The Gang have had quite the 2021 on Byrdbored. They have already landed two (#1) Vault songs as “Misled” and “Tonight” ruled earlier in the year. This week their classic hit, “Joanna”, moves from (#2) to the top of the Vault SongByrd 60 Singles Chart to give the group their third (#1) of the year. As I get older, I have realized how much I really like Kool & The Gang’s music. I truly think they are very unappreciated and overlooked far too often.

The top Vault song for the last three weeks by Alicia Keys, “Fallin’”, drops down to (#2) on the Vault Singles Chart but has been certified Platinum. OneRepublic remain strong at (#3) with “Apologize” for a second week. Dua Lipa jumps up three notches to (#4) with “Begging” to become Lipa’s sixth top five hit. Forest Blakk takes one step down to (#5) with “Where I First Found You” which is his fifth top five.

For King & Country move up two places to (#6) with “God Only Knows”. It has now spent the last four weeks as the top Vault Christian Contemporary song. Lenny Kravitz moves up two slots to (#7) with “Are You Gonna Go My Way” which takes over the top Vault Rock song from “The Pretender” by the Foo Fighters which falls to (#8). Old Dominion drop from (#6) down to (#9) but retain the top Vault Country song for a second week.

Ed Sheeran re-enters Byrdbored in the Vault Byrdy Dozen with “Perfect” at (#11) which originally was released in 2017 and peaked at (#6). The interest in Sheeran’s music should only increase in the coming months now that his new album, “Equals”, has been released and is the High Flyin’ Debut at (#2) on the SongByrd 60 Albums Chart.

John Mayer lands his 18th Byrdy Dozen hit single as “Assassin” blasts from (#19) to (#12) on the Vault 60 Singles chart. The song is featured on his (#1) album, “Battle Studies”, which was originally released in 2009. The album has already produced the (#1) hit, “Perfectly Lonely” and the (#2) hit, “Heartbreak Warfare”.

On the Vault 60 Albums Chart, Whitesnake score their fourth (#1) album on Byrdbored with “Restless Heart”. The album was originally released in 1996, but it had never been released in the United States until this week. The album actually produces five Vault 60 songs this week, and it could see quite a few song plays the rest of 2021 on into 2022.

Darius Rucker remains at (#2) with “Learn To Live” followed by “Songs In A Minor” by Alicia Keys at (#3) which jumps back up from (#7) last week. Old Dominion’s debut album, “Meat And Candy”, moves up one notch to (#4). Duran Duran’s “Rio” drops from the top down to (#5), but is the band’s third (#1) album on Byrdbored.

Despite Coldplay’s new album, “Music Of The Spheres”, not making any significant impact the group is having a solid Vault run. The band’s 2015 album, “A Head Full Of Dreams”, enters the Vault Byrdy Dozen at a new peak at (#7). The album’s lead single, “Adventure Of A Lifetime”, also jumps from (#48) to (#33) on the Vault 60 Singles Chart. Coldplay sits at (#14) on the SongByrd 60 Artists Chart.

Ed Sheeran Leads SongByrd 60 Singles & Artists Chart

Ed Sheeran continues to gain steam as 2021 ends. With the release of his new album, “Equals”, Sheeran’s hit single, “Shivers”, actually increases it’s plays to (25) and easily spends a second week on top of the SongByrd 60 Singles Chart. Sheeran also blasts from (#11) to (#1) on the Artists Chart to spend his first week on top with (107) total song spins this week.

Unfortunately Sheeran comes up just short of running the table on the SongByrd 60 coming in at (#2) on the Albums Chart with “Equals”. The album is his highest charter to date, however, and could seriously contend for the top with a full week next week. With “Shivers” most likely remaining strong in the coming weeks, and plenty of potential hits from “Equals”, Ed Sheeran should remain toward the top of the Artists Chart on into 2022.

The top five on the SongByrd 60 Singles Chart remain unchanged from last week. Daughtry’s “The Victim” remains at (#2) spending a fifth week as the top Rock song. “The Victim” is also certified Platinum this week. Forest Blakk’s “Fall Into Me” continues to grow but remains at (#3) for a second week. Old Dominion’s “I Was On A Boat That Day” remains as the top Country song for a third week but stays put at (#4). John Mayer’s “Wild Blue” spends a second week at (#5).

The Newsboys take over the top Christian Contemporary song with “Magnetic” jumping two notches to (#6). The hit is the band’s seventh Christian (#1) and their ninth Byrdy Dozen hit single. Skillet had held down the top Christian hit for the last six weeks with “Surviving The Game” which drops to (#7) on the overall Singles Chart this week.

Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood move up from (#13) to (#11) with “If I Didn’t Love You” to each land another Byrdy Dozen hit. Jason Aldean now has scored (41) Byrdy Dozen hits, while Carrie Underwood picks up her 16th. The hit duet has been gaining steam over the last few weeks and should receive a huge push the week Aldean releases his new album, “Macon”, on November 12th.

Dua Lipa scores her fifth hit single from her 6x Platinum album, “Future Nostalgia”, as “Cool” leaps from (#15) to (#12). Lipa has already landed two (#1) hits in 2021 with “Levitating” and “Hallucinate” which both are in the top five most played songs of the year. “Future Nostalgia” remains the front-runner for Album of the Year and currently sits at (#8) on the Albums Chart.

The Big Byrd Mover Song of the Week is Fuel’s “Landslide” which blasts from (#53) to (#37) in it’s second week on the SongByrd 60. The song is featured on the Rock band’s new album, “Anomaly”, which moves up two slots from (#8) to (#6) on the Albums Chart. The band’s other current hit, “Don’t Say I”, was the Power Pick Hit last week and moves up six notches to (#19).

The High Flyin’ Debut Song of the Week is Avery Anna’s “I Love You More” which comes in at (#42) with eight plays in it’s second week on J-BRD Radio. The song is also the Power Pick Hit of the Week since it picks up five more plays than last week. Look out for this one as 2021 comes to a close as it is simply a beautiful love song from a young lady with a lovely voice.

On the SongByrd 60 Albums Chart, Daughtry edges out Ed Sheeran with “Dearly Beloved” for a sixth non-consecutive week on top. Daughtry ties Wolfgang Van Halen’s “Mammoth WVH” album with six weeks at (#1), but remains behind Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” which spent eight weeks on top earlier in 2021.

Ed Sheeran’s “Equals” is the High Flyin’ Debut Album of the Week coming in at (#2). The debut beats his last album, “Divide”, which peaked at (#4) on Byrdbored. Old Dominion’s “Time, Tequila & Therapy” slides down a notch to (#3) followed by “Mammoth WVH” from Wolfgang Van Halen at (#4) and “Sob Rock” by John Mayer at (#5).

MercyMe’s latest album, “Inhale (Exhale)”, is the Power Pick Hit Album of the Week, as well as, the Big Byrd Mover of the Week. The album jumps nine notches to (#10) and picks up 17-song spins more than last week. The album is receiving some increase due to the group’s latest hit single, “Whiplash”, which leaps from (#11) to (#8) on the SongByrd 60. The album peaked at (#2) earlier in 2021 and has been certified Platinum.

Ed Sheeran takes over the SongByrd 60 Artists Chart mostly due to his new album, “Equals”, debuting at (#2) on the Albums Chart. However, it might have been his hit song, “Perfect”, crashing the Vault SongByrd 60 at (#11) that got him past Daughtry since his band still remains on top of the SongByrd 60 Albums Chart with “Dearly Beloved”. Daughtry holds down (#2) followed by Old Dominion at (#3), OneRepublic at (#4) and John Mayer rounding out the top five.

Whitesnake blast onto the chart at (#12) thanks to the re-issue of the Rock group’s 1996 album, “Restless Heart”. The album was never released (until now) in the United States, but since it is a 25-year old album is considered a Vault album nonetheless. “Restless Heart” debuts at (#1) on the Vault 60 Albums Chart giving Whitesnake their fourth (#1) album all-time.

In other SongByrd 60 Artists Chart news, MercyMe blast from (#32) to (#13) thanks to their Power Pick Hit Album, “Inhale (Exhale)”, and their (#8) hit single, “Whiplash”. Avery Anna also debuts on the chart at (#44) thanks to her High Flyin’ Debut Single (and Power Pick Hit Single), “I Love You More”.

The ByrdTrax volume drops (186) plays, but comes in very close to the 2021 average of (1,112). The Vault % takes a major hit with the lowest total all year at only 17% of the song spins. Some of this could be the culmination of all the new album releases late in the year and having the volume drop this week. Sometimes when the volume drops older music is what doesn’t get played. With Christmas music coming soon, Vault music should increase back to what it normally runs around 25% (if not higher).
